Our Mission Statement
Praying for Pennies, Inc. is a faith-driven nonprofit organization founded on a powerful truth: small change can create extraordinary change. What began in 2010 as a divine whisper to founder Beverly—has grown into a transformation movement dedicated to helping vulnerable communities across the United States and beyond.
From the very beginning, the vision was simple yet profound: collect pennies and use them to relieve suffering, restore dignity, and uplift those facing hardship. Early efforts helped families restore essential utilities, provided transportation to those in need, and delivered warmth and comfort to people experiencing homelessness. In 2014, volunteers collected just $329.40 in pennies—but those pennies became 22 blankets for the homeless in Washington, DC, proving that even the smallest contributions can make a meaningful difference.
Over time, what began as a grassroots act of faith transformed into a community-driven mission. Individuals, families, children, churches, and volunteers came together, pooling their resources and driven by a shared belief in compassion, service, and hope, to save their pennies. Their collective generosity made a significant impact, supporting youth ministries, assisting women in need, and strengthening outreach efforts within under-served communities.
On January 29, 2020, this burgeoning movement officially became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, expanding its reach and impact. Today, Praying for Pennies, Inc. continues to inspire people worldwide to give intentionally, pray faithfully, and serve generously.
Our bold vision is to collect ONE BILLION pennies—a symbol of unity, faith, and the immense power of collective giving. Each penny embodies hope, while each prayer signifies purpose. Every act of generosity enables us to nourish those in need, brings us closer to our goal of sheltering the homeless, and equips individuals with the tools to rebuild their lives.
Guided by the biblical principle, “Whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow” (Proverbs 13:11), Praying for Pennies, Inc. invites you to join our global mission. In this mission, every penny, every coin, and every dollar matters, and every person is equally important.
Our History.
In the Beginning, 2010: Our incredible journey began with a divine whisper. Beverly heard “Praying for Pennies” and felt called to embark on a mission to collect pennies from the ground. Through this act of kindness, Beverly reached out to family, friends, neighbors, and even strangers, seeking their spare change to support families in need. In 2011, these penny-saving efforts made a significant impact by helping a woman regain control of her home by restoring power, water, and gas. Our mission continued in 2013 as we saved more pennies and helped a woman who was desperately in need of a car.
The Dream comes to Life
In the fall of 2013, I excitedly shared my dream of “Praying for Pennies” with our VP, Darlene Moss, while we eagerly awaited our pizzas for the Youth Ministry. As I demonstrated the concept to her, I approached three curious customers and asked if they would be willing to share their pennies. Their enthusiasm was infectious! They eagerly rummaged through their pockets and purses, inspired by the idea that these small coins could one day feed the hungry and provide shelter for the homeless. Darlene and I watched in awe as they even rushed to their cars to collect every penny they could find!
In July 2014, with the fervent prayers of 25 individuals, we dedicated two months to collecting “Pennies.” Our hard work culminated in $329.40, which was used to purchase 22 brand-new blankets for the homeless in Washington, D.C.
In the fall of 2014, I presented the “Praying for Pennies” concept to a Women’s Discipleship ministry at my church. Initially, I encountered some challenges, but God had a marvelous plan! During a hair appointment, a 5-year-old girl and her 8-year-old brother unexpectedly got involved. That day, I was thrilled to discover that the little girl had secretly saved her pennies and placed them under the door, demonstrating that even the smallest voices can have a significant impact!
In July 2015, I hosted a lively crab fest with an incredible turnout of 55 amazing attendees. The event was a resounding success, raising a substantial amount of money, amounting to $321.77 in pennies! This event marked the start of summer donations to the Queen Esther Ministry, which has had a profound, positive impact on the lives of needy women.
In just a few short months, an incredible group of 300 ladies came together to raise a generous sum of $479.55 for the “Praying for Pennies” initiative. This donation was graciously accepted by our local church’s Youth Ministry, which will use it to support those in need.
On January 29, 2020, after years of dedicated work, the vision that emerged in 2010 blossomed into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization called Praying for Pennies, Inc. Our mission is to extend our hands and hearts to feed the impoverished, provide shelter to the homeless, and offer guidance to those in need. “Praying for Pennies” remains steadfast in its unwavering goal of collecting pennies for the needy! Our guiding scripture is, “Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow.” – Proverbs 13:11
